And you’re also right about the Marvin/Borgnine pairing. Besides the ones you mentioned, they did another movie together in 1972 for Aldrich called “Emperor of the North”. Borgnine plays this sadistic train conductor and Marvin is a hobo determined to ride his train. It’s a great movie. Not well known, but it’s fantastic.

I always wonder why women don’t like war movies or even westerns. It’s the chance to sit down and watch a bunch of men acting tough. And most of the time, they’re good looking men! It puzzles me.

Second, seeing this and your mentioning Borgnine I’m beginning to think he and Marvin were more of a pair than a lot of actors. “Bad Day At Black Rock”, “The Stranger Wore A Gun”, “Violent Saturday” and who knows what else.

How good is a director when he makes you care about a bunch of truly nasty men who have done awful things.
