I read your review again (when awake) and found it very interesting - now realising I need to see the movie again and watch out for the elements you highlight. It hadn't struck me at all about Eve possibly being gay, but I did assume that Addison was, until he suddenly told Eve she belonged to him. I think there is a sexist feeling to the very title 'All About Eve', so am interested in your suggestion about Mankiewicz possibly having a problem with women. Anyway, I will watch the TCM schedules and hope to see it again.

Paula, I swear "All About Eve" makes so much more sense when you realize that little bit about Eve. I could never really grasp why she allowed Phoebe to stay overnight--she seemed like such a bitch, so why the sudden goodwill towards a total stranger? And another thing that bothers me about AAE: What the hell happened to Birdie? I love Thelma Ritter so it was a bummer to see her just disappear from the film.

I've always wondered if Mankiewicz had a problem with women. I'm not sure if you've ever seen "A Letter to Three Wives". I just realized it tonight--after reading your comment--that the women are kind of stupid/self-absorbed in that one as well, while most of the men come across as fantastic.

Oh! Have you ever seen George Sanders in "Call Me Madam"? He's got a beautiful singing voice--it was rather unexpected. I read that he put out a record in the 50's: "The George Sanders Touch: Songs for the Lovely Lady". Along with his biography, that's something else I'd love to find!
